Full Tilt Poker's Gambling License Revoked
In a move that did not surprise anyone who has been following the saga of online poker and the events of what is called Black Friday, the Alderney Gambling Control Commission revoked the licenses of Vantage Limited, Filco Limited, and Oxalic Limited, who trade as Full Tilt Poker (FTP) effective immediately. In a hearing that was held over six days, the commission found that, “…FTP had fundamentally misled AGCC about their operational integrity by continuously reporting as liquid funds balances that had been covertly seized or restrained by US authorities, or that were otherwise not actually available to the operator. Serious breaches of AGCC regulations include false reporting, unauthorized provision of credit, and failure to report material events.” The license of a fourth firm involved, Orinic Limited, remains suspended.

While expected by many, this was a blow to the operators of the site, who have been working on the sale of the company to outside investors. In their case before the commission, they argued that such a revocation would put the sale in serious harm, as well as their ability to repay the money owed to those who played on the site. This stance was rebuffed by the commission who said, in a prepared press release, “It is important to note that the revocation of FTP’s licenses does not, as has been suggested, prevent a reactivation of the business under new ownership and management.” The commission went on in their statement to say, “Unresolved claims by players against FTP become a matter for the police and civil authorities. Now that FTP’s licenses have been revoked, AGCC no longer has jurisdiction over these companies.”

Foo Fighters To Rock Blizzcon
Blizzard has announced the performers for the traditional Saturday night closing concert at BlizzCon. This year’s headliners will be Foo Fighters, who will be taking time from their current international tour for their best-selling seventh album, “Wasting Light.”

Opening for Foo Fighters is a group that is near and dear to the hearts of many World of Warcraft players, The Artist Formerly Known as Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain. Chieftain is Blizzard’s in-house metal band, consisting of members of the Blizzard staff, and they will be performing both familiar and brand new songs drawn not just from WoW but also from StarCraft and Diablo.

Following this announcement earlier this week, there has been quite a bit of both positive and negative feedback regarding the choice of Foo Fighters. People have even come out and said that their choice to buy or not buy the Virtual Ticket (by Internet or DirecTV) will be based solely on this Naturally, Blizzard cannot please everyone with any choice like this. Personally, I think there is so much more to BlizzCon than this concert, and that to use the concert as the only criteria is not a wise decision.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Release Date Announced
Is there a Star Wars fan in your house? Is that person also a gamer? Then you won’t have to think too hard to come up with a great Christmas present this year. It was announced Saturday (September 24) that the long-awaited “Star Wars: The Old Republic” game will be released on December 20 in the US (and December 22 in Europe).

While the game was made available for pre-order back in July, they waited on the announcement of the actual release date. Gamers have not been waiting though, as some outlets had already sold out of the Collector’s Edition of the game.

WoWathon For Child's Play
The third annual WoWathon starts this week. What is that you say? A group of World of Warcraft players will be playing a marathon, leveling two new toons non-stop all the way to 85, to raise money for Child’s Play.

Inspired three years ago by a charity Mario Marathon, this group of students and friends from Southern California will once again be playing in shifts and broadcasting their journey as they have fun and share their experiences with others in the hopes of inspiring people to donate to bring a little cheer to hospitalized children. Together, the two previous WoWathons raised almost $14,000, and they hope to make this the best year yet.

This year’s toons will be Chyld and Playy, a druid/hunter combination, and they will be playing on the Lightbringer server. Worgen alliance toons, they will be grouping with friends and others around their same level, in order to maximize their experience gains, and will not be “power-leveled” by upper level toons. However, they do welcome people to interact with them, send messages of encouragement, and the like. You can also watch the marathon and chat with the participants through the Ustream features on their website. They do warn potential viewers and other players that there may be strong language and mature content.

Supreme Court Slays California Law
Monday, the United States Supreme Court hit the California Legislature like an end game boss attacking an unwitting player, striking down the state’s law, prohibiting the sale or rental of violent video games to minors. The state passed the law in 2005, claiming that the gaming industry’s voluntary rating system was not strong enough.

In the 7-2 ruling, the court ruled the video games, like movies and other forms of expression, were protected free speech, in accordance to the Constitution of the United States. In the ruling, the court notes that states have the duty to protect children from harm, but they have no “…free-floating power to restrict the ideas to which children may be exposed.” In the ruling for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote, “California has singled out the purveyors of video games for disfavored treatment – at least when compared to booksellers, cartoonists and movie producers – and has given no persuasive reason why.”

Some Possible New Games For The Wii U
One big question that most folks of course want to know about the Wii U is what games will be released for that system. One major concept is that there will be more third-party games than ever before, as many companies who had thought their games were not a good match for Nintendo platforms are supporting the new system. This will include some games for “hard core” gamers. Still, I was hoping for more specific announcements beyond the presentation video that gave more a general overview. There were some, but this is one case where more would have been better.

There was much buzz surrounding the montage of upcoming Wii U titles that was shown in Nintendo’s pre-expo press conference. While it makes sense that the footage would be from other systems, as these games are still in early development stages, that was not made clear during the event, and that upset quite a few people. One game that surprised some people in on that list was Batman: Arkham City. No details have been released yet, but it will be interesting to see how the new controller is utilized.

One company that is showing major support for the Wii U is Ubisoft. The first Wii U exclusive first person shooter game, Killer Freaks From Outer Space, will come from Ubisoft. This FPS is a sci-fi game featuring aliens trying to destroy the Earth. Players will use jetpacks, energy guns, and other sci-fi weapons. What will make this game special for the Wii U is that the gyroscope in the controller will be used to aim the gun. Also, the second screen will be used in multiplayer mode as a “realtime enemy director.” What this will mean for players is something we will have to experience first hand, but it does sound interesting. Other Ubisoft games for Wii U will include titles from the Assassin’s Creed and Raving Rabbids franchises, as well as Ghost Recon Online.

More Information About The Wii U
After their pre-expo press conference, Nintendo representatives said that there would be more announcements coming during last week’s E3, particularly about the Wii U. Some folks were disappointed and even a bit confused after their presentation, but to be honest, I’m not entirely sure that the further information that came later truly made up for a weak initial showing.

Often there is disappointment not in what is being said, but how it is being said, and I think that was much of the problem with Nintendo’s press conference. Even their representatives said during the expo that they could have done better with their initial reveal of the Wii U. The system sounds great, but the presentation left people scratching their heads about even the most basic of details regarding the console. One simple close-up graphic image of both the controller and the unit together would have solved much of this dilemma.

During the expo, more information was released regarding the specs of the Wii U. Now, these could be subject to change, as it will be at least April 2012 (and could be as late as December 2012) before the new system is released. However, as things stand right now, there are some interesting details about the system.

Ubisoft E3 Press Conference
RThis year, Ubisoft is celebrating their 25th anniversary. They started their E3 press conference with a video montage of various games of all types, highlighting their large library of successful titles.

As part of their anniversary, they are introducing a new version of one of their signature titles with Rayman Origins. Players of the original will want to give this one a look, as well as kids and families. This has a wonderful animated look and feel.

If you like driving games, Driver San Francisco is one of Ubisoft’s upcoming games. The trailer looked nice, and the game will have solo and multiplayer options. Far Cry 3 is scheduled to release in 2012, and the demo showed some good graphics. It is a first person shooter, but be warned that it does have mature language and situations. The Brothers in Arms franchise is also back, with Furious 4. Set in WWII, this game is not like most other games set in that time period. Instead of being serious, it has an irreverent style and seems inspired by “Inglorious Bastards.” It will also release in 2012.

EA E3 Press Conference
Electronic Arts (EA) was one of only two game publishers to have a major press conference prior to the opening of E3. They had a number of games from their own development teams as well as those in conjunction with other development companies that they discussed during their presentation.

EA opened with one of the industry’s most popular titles, Mass Effect from Bioware. The latest installment, Mass Effect 3, will release on March 6, 2012. In addition to in-game footage and a live demo, the debuted the first trailer for the game.

Need for Speed The Run, from EA Black Box, will take racers from San Francisco to New York, but it is more than just a car race, as you fight for your very life over every mile. A unique feature of the game, Autolog, is being incorporated into the very story of this installment of the game. Also, not all of the action will be limited to the road, as players will complete some gameplay on foot when they are forced to leave their car.
